Medical doctors in Ogun State have initiated an indefinite strike, bringing attention to unresolved issues regarding their allowances and the pay disparity between state and federal medical workers.
This move, confirmed by the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Kunle Ashimi, during a press conference on Tuesday, is expected to significantly impact the healthcare services in the state.
The industrial action, reported by Daily Trust, hinges on the reviewed Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).
The doctors argue that implementing CONMESS is crucial to addressing the exodus of medical professionals from Ogun State, who are seeking better remuneration elsewhere.
“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to reach a compromise with the government,” Dr. Ashimi lamented.
He highlighted that while the government has been appealing for patience by citing common issues like minimum wage, the pressing concerns of the medical professionals remain unaddressed.
Dr. Ashimi elaborated on the situation, stating, “Ogun State is losing a lot of doctors daily because of the pay disparity.”
He emphasized that adopting the reviewed CONMESS would serve as a significant incentive for doctors to remain in the state, thereby stabilizing the healthcare system.
