The Lagos State government has issued a clarion call to breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women, urging them to support the state’s advocacy on exclusive breastfeeding.
This was announced by the Medical Director and CEO of the General Hospital, Ijede, Dr. Olufemi Aletan, during the commemoration of the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week, held on Monday at the hospital.
Dr. Aletan highlighted that the state’s advocacy for exclusive breastfeeding is a significant initiative led by the office of the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
The initiative aims to continuously educate and encourage mothers and expectant women about the critical importance and numerous benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby’s life.
Dr. Aletan noted that the Lagos State Government has made it mandatory for civil servants to take a six-month maternity leave.
This policy ensures that mothers have ample time to breastfeed their babies adequately, fostering a strong bond between mother and child.
He emphasized that exclusive breastfeeding is not just a natural instinct but a crucial practice that can significantly impact the health and development of the baby.
Dr. Aletan cautioned mothers against giving their babies water or baby milk unless advised by a medical professional.
“On no occasion should you give your babies water, baby milk, except on medical grounds, and that is why the state government is advocating exclusive breastfeeding because of its numerous advantages,” he asserted.
Enumerating the benefits, Dr. Aletan revealed that exclusive breastfeeding can help prevent breast cancer in women, support the mother’s body in healing and returning to its normal physiological state, and is more economical. Additionally, it plays a vital role in enhancing the baby’s intelligence quotient and strengthens the bond between mother and baby.
He urged mothers not to take the practice of exclusive breastfeeding lightly, stating, “A healthy baby is a healthy society.”
The celebration of World Breastfeeding Week at the General Hospital, Ijede, also featured a Playlet and Quiz segment organized by the hospital’s Paediatric Department staff. The event served as an educational and interactive platform to further promote the message of exclusive breastfeeding.
It is noteworthy that World Breastfeeding Week, recognized annually by the World Health Organization from August 1st to 7th, this year embraces the theme “Closing The Gap: Breastfeeding Support For All.”
