In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Nigerian music and entertainment industry has lost one of its most cherished icons, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu.
The legendary singer, songwriter, and actress reportedly passed away on Tuesday evening at the Reddington Hospital, Lagos. The tragic incident occurred shortly after she performed at the birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli.
Eyewitnesses at the event confirmed the devastating news. “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” an unnamed source revealed.
Born on January 31, 1952, Ms. Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned decades, earning her the affectionate title of “The Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press. Her multifaceted talents saw her excel not only in music but also in politics and activism. She served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and, in 2013, was appointed the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Onyeka Onwenu’s legacy is immortalized through her numerous hit songs, including the timeless duet “Wait for Me” with Juju maestro, King Sunny Ade. Her contributions to the music industry and her advocacy for women’s rights have left an indelible mark on Nigerian society.
