The Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a detailed and stringent press statement concerning the proposed country-wide protest orchestrated by the Take It Back Movement.
The statement underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) commitment to upholding democratic rights while ensuring public safety and order.
The NPF acknowledges the democratic right of citizens to organize protests. However, it emphasizes that such activities must comply with established rules and regulations.
The statement highlighted the necessity for protests to maintain decency, adhere to the rule of law, and respect the rights of other citizens to move freely and conduct their daily activities without fear or hindrance.
In the days leading up to the proposed protest, the NPF engaged with the leadership of the Take It Back Movement and their accredited solicitors.
The police made it clear that, akin to practices in other civilized societies, the Movement must submit detailed plans to the respective State Commissioners of Police. This includes specifying the venue, route, start and end times, operational modalities, and other essential information to ensure public safety and facilitate police oversight.
The NPF has called for an undertaking from the organizers, ensuring they can control and manage the protest to prevent it from being hijacked by unscrupulous elements.
The police are particularly concerned about preventing loss of lives and destruction of property. Despite these engagements, the Movement has yet to provide the required information, which is mandated by the Constitution, the Police Act, and other enabling laws.
Intelligence reports available to the NPF suggest that the protests could lead to widespread mayhem, targeting innocent citizens, markets, stores, private and public properties, and critical government infrastructure.
The name “Take It Back Movement” has been described as having undemocratic, unconstitutional, and illegal undertones.
In light of these concerns, the NPF has put all police formations across the country on high alert. The police are directed to protect innocent lives and properties vigorously. Officers are instructed to act decisively against any acts of arson, intimidation, harassment, threats to lives and properties, breaches of public peace, or any criminal activities that may arise from the protests. Perpetrators will be arrested and promptly prosecuted.
The Inspector General of Police issued a final advisory to the general public, urging all Nigerians to be well-informed and cautious.
