Former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). This significant defection, which underscores the fluid nature of political alliances in Nigeria, took place on Saturday during a high-profile event in Abuja.
Philip Shaibu, who was previously a stalwart of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led a coalition of PDP Legacy members in a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Edo State.
The defection ceremony coincided with the inauguration of the APC’s National Campaign Council for the upcoming Edo Governorship Election slated for September 21.
The former Deputy Governor and his followers were warmly received by the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje. The event, which was marked by a blend of pomp and political fervor, saw Ganduje extolling the virtues of the APC and welcoming the new members into the fold.
Ganduje, in his address, emphasized the significance of Shaibu’s decision, portraying it as a testament to the growing strength and appeal of the APC. He stated, “Philip Shaibu’s defection is a clear indication that the APC remains the party of choice for progressive-minded leaders and citizens who are committed to the development and prosperity of Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.”
Shaibu, in his remarks, expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and articulated his vision for Edo State, aligning it with the APC’s agenda. He noted that his decision to join the APC was driven by a desire to contribute more effectively to the growth and development of the state.
“I am here to join hands with like-minded individuals who are dedicated to the progress of our state. The APC’s policies and vision resonate with my commitment to serving the people of Edo State. Together, we will achieve great things,” Shaibu declared.
The defection is expected to have significant implications for the political dynamics in Edo State, particularly as the governorship election approaches. Analysts predict that Shaibu’s move could bolster the APC’s chances in the upcoming election, given his influence and the support of the PDP Legacy Coalition.
