In a bid to combat the alarming increase in cyber-related crimes and the dissemination of false information, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has taken decisive measures to safeguard national security.
Recognising the potential harm caused by the spread of misinformation and cyber threats on various social media platforms, the IGP has ordered the expansion of the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NCCC) to the existing Force Criminal Investigations Department Annex offices.
This strategic move aims to prevent any breakdown of law and order and counter attempts to discredit the country.
By establishing operational offices at the FCID Annex offices in Lagos, Kaduna, Gombe, and Enugu States, the NCCC will enhance the efficiency of handling cybercrime matters in line with the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act 2024.
The expansion of the NCCC will enable the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to effectively combat cybercrime and promptly respond to cyber threats across the nation. This development underscores the NPF’s commitment to securing digital spaces and ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians. The expansion will facilitate coordinated investigations of cyber-related infractions reported to the police, ensuring a professional and comprehensive approach to cybercrime prevention.
The IGP emphasises that the expansion of the NCCC is a crucial step in safeguarding national security and maintaining the peaceful coexistence of well-meaning citizens and residents of Nigeria. With these strategic measures in place, the NPF is poised to proactively combat cyber-related crimes and protect the integrity of the nation’s digital landscape.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, affirms the NPF’s unwavering dedication to protecting digital spaces and reassures the public of their commitment to securing the safety and security of all Nigerians. The expansion of the NCCC is a testament to the NPF’s determination to combat cyber threats and ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
