On June 14, 2024, the bustling community of Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye came alive as the Chairman of Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA, Hon Rasaq Ajala, (HRA) ignited the traditional Burnfire at exactly 12 PM on Anifowose Street, Idi-Oro, Mushin, Lagos.
This ceremonial fire marked the official opening of the highly anticipated OC Classical 2024, an annual event that celebrates the rich cultural heritage and vibrant spirit of the Odi-Olowo community.
A Celebration of Unity and Culture
The OC Classical Carnival, known as the Odi-Olowo Classical Carnival, is a significant cultural event that brings together energetic youth and residents to celebrate and preserve their community’s cultural values.
This grand carnival has become a beacon of unity, drawing visitors from all corners of the world and solidifying its status as a premier event in Lagos State.
Originating on Akala Street in Idi-Oro, the OC Classical was founded in 1996 to reshape the negative stereotypes associated with Odi-Olowo.
As Hon Aruna Omotayo Adeosun, a key committee member and Councillor representing Ward A2, explained, the carnival was born out of a need to change the perception of a community often unfairly maligned.
“Previously, Odi-Olowo was seen in a negative light, but through OC Classical, we’ve shown that our community is a hub of talent and positive energy,” Adeosun said.
Promoting Unity and Economic Growth
The primary goal of OC Classical is to foster unity among the 32-street community of Odi-Olowo and beyond. The carnival has not only bridged gaps within the community but has also brought economic benefits to local traders and businesses, thanks to the influx of visitors each year.
The meticulously organized events, ranging from a soccer competition to vibrant musical performances, create a lively atmosphere where residents and visitors alike exchange gifts, form new friendships, and celebrate the community’s heritage. The carnival culminates with a grand soccer final and a series of performances by popular hip-hop and Fuji artists, including the renowned Wasiu Alabi Pasuma.
A Community Effort
The success of OC Classical is a testament to the unwavering support from state and local governments, traditional rulers, and various organizations. Leaders such as Hon. Rasaq Ajala, Senator Ganiyu Solomon, and Hon Adeyemi Alli have been instrumental in the carnival’s growth. Additionally, the contributions of notable figures like Mr. Nofiu Ajikawo and Alhaji Wahab Olota have been pivotal.
After the main event, the festivities continue with the “Adabo” closing ceremony two weeks later, where gifts are distributed to underprivileged community members, ensuring that the spirit of generosity and community support extends beyond the carnival.
