In response to widespread misinformation regarding the arrest of 127 suspected internet fraudsters by the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Saturday, June 8, 2024, the agency has issued a detailed statement to clarify the facts.
The EFCC operatives executed a coordinated sting operation at two clubs in Akure, acting on credible intelligence. The arrests were carried out professionally and without incident, contrary to some social media reports alleging brutality and misconduct.
The EFCC addressed viral social media narratives, including a video showing two women with apparent lacerations, purportedly inflicted by the EFCC operatives.
The commission dismissed these claims, suggesting the video may have been staged and announced plans to conduct a forensic analysis to uncover its authenticity and hold responsible parties accountable.
“No suspect was assaulted, brutalized, or subjected to any dehumanizing treatment during the operation,” the EFCC emphasized. They also refuted claims that tear gas was used, explaining that EFCC personnel do not carry tear gas canisters or whips during sting operations.
Regarding the CCTV footage from the crime scene, the EFCC clarified that no damage was done to the CCTV facility. The device was removed by a club staff member at the behest of EFCC operatives to preserve evidence. The club manager, who confessed to the crime and facilitated the removal of the CCTV device, is currently in EFCC custody and assisting with the investigation.
The EFCC reiterated their commitment to professional conduct, stating that their Standard Operating Procedures prohibit the use of brute force. They maintain a strict adherence to respect for human dignity and the rule of law.
Profiling of the suspects arrested in Akure has been completed, and the EFCC confirmed that they will face prosecution accordingly.
