President Bola Tinubu has approved a comprehensive mandate for the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action (SPEC) and announced the expansion of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions (P-CAGE).
The newly established Office of SPEC will spearhead Nigeria’s climate initiatives, serving as the lead negotiator on climate-related matters, carbon market management, and international engagements.
The Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action will report directly to President Tinubu, ensuring seamless integration of climate policies within the Federal Government’s agenda.
Key Functions of the Office of SPEC Include
1. Leading negotiations on climate-related matters and carbon market initiatives.
2. Coordinating with the Secretariat of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) and the NCCC Supervising Council.
3. Overseeing climate action activities across federal and subnational entities.
4. Acting as the main liaison with international climate bodies such as the UNFCCC and COP.
5. Steering efforts towards fulfilling Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
6. Chairing the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions.
7. Representing Nigeria in all climate-related diplomatic engagements.
In conjunction with this mandate, President Tinubu has expanded the membership of P-CAGE, incorporating representatives from key ministries and agencies to fortify the committee’s capacity. The new members include representatives from the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Foreign Affairs, Petroleum Resources (Gas), Innovation, Science & Technology, NNPCL, and the Energy Transition Office.
The Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions is set to be inaugurated in July. President Tinubu underscores the importance of dedication and patriotism in executing this crucial national assignment, aiming to achieve significant milestones in climate action and green industrial growth for the benefit of Nigerians and the African continent.
