Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), delivered opening remarks at a Breakfast Meeting with Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs), underscoring the Commission’s proactive engagement and upcoming initiatives.
During his address, Dr. Olatunji lauded the presence and efforts of DPCO representatives, emphasizing the Commission’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. This innovative approach, which has garnered international interest from various Data Protection Authorities, serves as a framework for collaborative data governance and compliance.
Dr. Olatunji elaborated on the critical roles of DPCOs in the registration of Data Controllers and Processors, as well as in audit filing. He encouraged the organisations to intensify their efforts in these areas to ensure robust data protection practices. Furthermore, he highlighted the significance of the National Certification process and the essential role DPCOs play in it.
A major highlight of the meeting was the announcement that Nigeria will host the Network of Africa Data Protection Authorities conference and Annual General Meeting in 2025. Dr. Olatunji called on DPCOs to collaborate closely with the Commission to ensure the success of this prestigious event.
The meeting also featured a one-on-one session with Thelma Okorie of Banwo and Ighodalo, providing an interactive platform for extensive discussions and feedback from attendees. The session included a vibrant question-and-answer segment, allowing for direct engagement with the Commissioner.
Other critical topics addressed included adherence to the Nigeria Data Protection Act and the comprehensive compliance services provided by DPCOs. Dr. Olatunji reiterated the Commission’s commitment to maintaining high standards of data protection and compliance across the nation.
