In a significant step towards sustainable waste management, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has partnered with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to train urban miners in advanced plastic waste collection and handling techniques.
The two-day training programme, held under the theme “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chain Through Circular Economy Practices,” marks the pilot implementation of an innovative plastic waste collection system in Lekki and Yaba.
The initiative saw the training of 150 waste pickers from both the formal and informal recycling sectors. The project aims to create job opportunities, boost profits for waste pickers, and achieve a 30% reduction in plastic waste, thereby advancing the principles of the circular economy.
The collaboration between LAWMA and UNIDO underscores a commitment to not only reduce plastic pollution but also enhance the livelihoods of those working within the waste management ecosystem.
By equipping urban miners with the necessary skills and knowledge, the programme is expected to have a substantial impact on waste reduction and recycling efforts in Lagos.
