The term “alma mater” dates back to the 1600s and originates from Latin, translating to “nourishing mother.” For me, the University of Ilorin is my alma mater—my mother institution. Just as one wouldn’t mock my own mother and expect laughter, I hold my alma mater in high regard and won’t tolerate disrespect towards it.
I rarely visited X, previously known as Twitter, but upon visiting a few minutes ago, I realized I was tagged in a post about the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, that I find condemnable.
When one finds themselves in a position where others look up to them as a role model or mentor, it becomes paramount to exercise caution in both speech and conduct. It is essential to avoid inadvertently misleading mentees or making statements that are inconsistent with one’s status.
In a situation like the one depicted in the attached screenshot, diplomacy should have applied—a tactful approach to addressing issues without resorting to condemnation. That last paragraph, “ALL that went to Unilorin in that year were people that could not pass UME,” is condescending! I no believe am sef. The remarks made by Jarus, particularly in the final paragraph of the post, are not only disparaging but also insulting to the school’s alumni. Equally, it emanates an air of arrogance, “low standard mushroom alternatives.”
I believe it is imperative for individuals to consider the impact of their words before expressing them. Effective communication and commentary require adherence to ethical standards. It is time we started emphasizing the importance of being respectful and responsible in our interactions as human beings.
