In a devastating incident that unfolded on Monday morning, two siblings lost their lives in a tragic auto crash at Iruwon junction along the Imowo-Ibadan garage road in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps spokesperson, Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the heartbreaking incident, revealing that the accident occurred at 7:50 am and involved a Honda Accord car with the registration number KJA 394 EE. The vehicle, reportedly moving at excessive speed, lost control and collided with two pedestrians walking along the roadside.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted that the Honda Accord, navigating a bend on the axis, failed to control its speed, resulting in a tragic collision with the male and female siblings. The impact was fatal, instantly claiming the lives of the pedestrians.
Akinbiyi provided further details, stating, “Two confirmed dead pedestrians (male and female siblings) were deposited at Ijebu Ode General Hospital Mortuary. The Honda Accord car, marked KJA 394 EE, was towed to the police station in Obalende, Ijebu Ode, for further investigation.”
The driver of the Honda Accord, responsible for the fatal crash, was promptly apprehended by the Police from Obalende Division, Ijebu Ode. Angry youths, initially blocking the Imowo-Ibadan garage road, were dispersed by a joint effort of the Police and the Nigerian Army.
Akinbiyi expressed his condolences to the grieving family of the deceased and called on drivers to exercise caution and avoid excessive speed. He also emphasized the importance of pedestrians facing oncoming traffic to minimize potential dangers while walking by the roadside.
The intervention of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), the Army, and the Police prevented a potentially dangerous situation, as Akinbiyi noted, “But for the intervention of TRACE, the Army, and Police, the driver would have been lynched, the vehicle burnt with the likelihood of mayhem following.”
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and underscores the need for both motorists and pedestrians to prioritize safety on the roads.
