The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured their place in the Africa Cup of Nations’ round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau.
The lone goal came in the 36th minute when Opa Sangante turned a Moses Simon cross into his own net, giving Nigeria the edge they needed.
Despite a relatively sterile domination by Nigeria in the first half, Sangante’s own goal proved to be the game-changer.
The Super Eagles, who previously drew 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea and secured a 1-0 victory against Ivory Coast, finish second in Group A with seven points.
The win sets up Jose Peseiro’s team for a last-16 clash on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan against the runners-up in Group C, potentially Senegal, Guinea, or Cameroon. Equatorial Guinea’s 4-0 victory over hosts Ivory Coast secured their position at the top of Group A, propelled by a superior goal difference.
While Nigeria showcased efficiency in their recent performances, they missed opportunities to further extend their lead in the match against Guinea-Bissau.
African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, and substitute Zaidu Sanusi both had goals disallowed for offside in the second half. Calvin Bassey’s penalty appeal was turned down, and Ola Aina squandered a notable chance with a missed shot.
Guinea-Bissau, already eliminated before the game, experienced another defeat, concluding their Cup of Nations campaign with three losses.
Despite their previous shock win away to Nigeria in qualifying last March, they are yet to secure a victory in 12 attempts across four appearances at the tournament.
