The Lagos State government has issued an immediate ban on the production, sale, distribution, and usage of styrofoam and single-use plastics.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
Lagos, renowned for its bustling energy and vibrant lifestyle, is now taking a decisive step to address the escalating environmental challenges posed by styrofoam and single-use plastics.
Wahab declared the ban on his social media handle, emphasizing the urgent need to curb the adverse effects of these materials on the state’s environment.
Despite regular efforts by the Lagos State Waste Management Agency to clear drainage channels, styrofoam and other single-use plastics persistently obstruct vital pathways, exacerbating the city’s waste management challenges. Commissioner Wahab underscored the pressing necessity for the ban, highlighting the severe consequences of these materials on the environment.
“Following the menace which single-use plastics, especially non-biodegradable styrofoam, are causing on the environment, the Lagos State government, through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, is hereby announcing a ban on the usage and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the state with immediate effect,” the official statement reads.
