In a somber visit to the accident scene at Oko-Olowo expressway, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq expresses condolences and emphasizes the importance of road safety.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has visited the tragic scene of a collision on the Oko-Olowo expressway in Ilorin West local government, where two heavy trucks collided and erupted in flames, claiming three lives and leaving several others injured.
AbdulRazaq extended heartfelt sympathies to the victims and their families, urging motorists to prioritize safety on the roads.
He cautioned against excessive speed and emphasized the need for responsible driving to prevent accidents.
Expressing gratitude for the federal government’s investment in the Oko-Olowo expressway and other federal road projects in the state, AbdulRazaq stated the state’s commitment to engaging with the federal government.
He proposed the construction of a flyover at the Malete junction to alleviate congestion and reduce accidents on the busy expressway.
Addressing reporters at the accident scene, the governor said, “There is a need for continuous intervention on this road. For example, a flyover is needed to reduce congestion and accidents. But the first thing is safety. People’s safety is important. Drivers should control their speed because there are communities along this road.”
Acknowledging the importance of road safety, he emphasized that it is the responsibility of the Federal Road Safety Corps to ensure safe usage of the road, highlighting that the tragic accident was reportedly a result of excessive speed by the involved motorists.
The governor’s visit was accompanied by key officials, including the supervising commissioner for works Abdulqowiyu Olododo, Director of Kwara State Fire Service Falade John Olumuyiwa, and CEO of Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) Adegboye Akeem.
Prior to the accident site visit, Governor AbdulRazaq paid a condolence visit to Maigida House in Edun community, Ilorin South local government area, where a building had been engulfed by fire.
