In a concerted effort to bring an end to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the leaders of various United Nations (UN) organizations and prominent humanitarian groups have issued a resounding call for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire.”
The joint plea emphasizes the urgent need for both parties to honor their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law.
Signed by the heads of numerous UN entities and international charities, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the International Organization for Migration, the UN Development Programme, the UN refugee agency UNHCR, as well as renowned non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like Save the Children and CARE International, among others, this united appeal carries substantial weight in the global call for peace.
The statement unequivocally condemns the horrifying incidents of Israelis being killed and taken as hostages by Hamas, in addition to the relentless rocket attacks launched from Gaza. However, it underscores the dire situation in Gaza, where countless civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict.
The heads of these organizations express their outrage at the 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza who have been cut off from essential supplies, including food, water, medicine, electricity, and fuel.
Since the outbreak of the conflict on October 7, which began when Hamas fighters initiated an unprecedented assault on Israeli communities, Israel has nearly sealed off the Gaza Strip.
Responding with a massive bombardment aimed at eradicating Hamas, the conflict has now persisted for 30 days.
As the leaders of UN bodies and humanitarian groups collectively insist, “Enough is enough. This must stop now.”
