In Niger, a coup was declared on national TV by Nigerien soldiers in the early hours of Thursday, July 27.
Prior to this announcement, the soldiers had detained President Mohamed Bazoum and sealed off access to his residence and offices, refusing to release him.
During the broadcast, a group of 10 senior officers, led by Col Maj Amadou Abdramane, announced that the National Council of the State Guard of the Nation had taken action.
They dissolved the constitution, suspended all institutions, and closed the nation’s borders.
The reasons cited for their actions were the deteriorating security situation and the poor state of economic and social governance.
As a consequence, all governmental institutions were suspended, and day-to-day responsibilities would be handled by the heads of the ministries.
The soldiers emphasised that “external partners should refrain from interfering, and to enforce their control.”
They implemented a night curfew from 22:00 to 05:00 local time until further notice.
The situation remains tense as the nation awaits further developments.
