Three ships from the Chinese Navy have arrived in Nigeria as part of their mission to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
The visiting Chinese Navy Escort Task Group (ETG) 162 consists of the MSL Destroyer NANNING, MSL Frigate SANYA, and Supply Ship WEISHANHU.
The delegation, led by Chinese Ambassador Chi Jian Chun, aims to enhance maritime security in West Africa during their stay from July 2 to 6.
The MSL Destroyer NANNING docked at Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) Berth 21, while the other two ships remained at anchorage.
Ambassador Chun highlighted the significance of the visit, emphasizing “the desire to deepen and improve the relationship and cooperation between China and Nigeria.”
He regarded the visit as a symbol of the harmonious bond between the two countries, further stating that China and Nigeria would continue to collaborate and promote peace and harmony within the international community.
With over 700 personnel and three ships, the Chinese delegation showcases the strong commitment to fostering bilateral military cooperation. Ambassador Chun expressed confidence in overcoming obstacles by strengthening collaboration between the military sectors of both countries. He reaffirmed China’s dedication to facilitating and promoting the relationship between China and Nigeria.
Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, welcomed the visit and emphasized its role in solidifying the relationship between the Nigerian Navy and the Chinese Navy. He highlighted the importance of joint efforts in combating crimes, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea.
During the visit, interactions, sporting activities, and exchanges of mementos and gifts are expected to take place, fostering discussions about future cooperation between the two navies.
The Chinese residents in Lagos enthusiastically gathered at the NPA to welcome the Chinese envoy, reflecting the warmth and reception accorded to the delegation.
