In a bid to promote national unity and reconciliation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently engaged in a productive meeting with esteemed first-class traditional rulers from various regions of the country.
The gathering took place on June 9, 2023, at the prestigious Old Banquet Hall within the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
This meeting served as a significant step in President Tinubu’s efforts to consult with key national stakeholders on a broad spectrum of pressing issues.
Among the paramount objectives was exploring ways to enhance unity and reconciliation within the nation.
His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’adu Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, led his esteemed colleagues to this momentous event.
In his opening remarks, the Sultan expressed their purpose for visiting the president, which involved conveying their congratulations and pledging unwavering support towards the enormous responsibility of governing the country.
Being acknowledged as the leader of Nigeria’s Muslim community, the Sultan emphasized that the council of traditional rulers comprises experts from diverse domains of human endeavor.
“This abundance of knowledge and experience makes the council a valuable resource for the President to tap into,” Sultan said.
The Sultan assured President Tinubu that the traditional leaders would be readily available to assist him whenever he seeks their guidance and support.
Oba Adeyeye Enitan Adewusi, the Ooni of Ife, also urged President Tinubu to utilize the traditional rulers more actively, particularly in addressing the pressing issue of insecurity.
In a resolute plea, the Ooni exclaimed, “Mr. President, use us. Use us. Use us.”
Distinguished attendees at the meeting included Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Senator George Akume (the Secretary to the Government of the Federation), the Sultan of Sokoto, the Ooni of Ife, the Emir of Kano, the Obi of Onitsha, the Tor Tiv, the Etsu Nupe, the Deji of Akure, the Shehu of Borno, the Permanent Secretary, the Elegushi of Ikate, the Jaja of Opobo, the Lamido of Adamawa, the Emir of Zauzzau, the Gbong Gwom Jos, the Attah Igala, the Alake of Egbaland, the Shehu of Borno, and a representative of the Oba of Benin.
