President Bola Tinubu has taken the decision to suspend Godwin Emefiele from his position as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The announcement was made by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, through a statement released on Friday.
According to the statement, President Tinubu has suspended Mr. Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from his role as the Central Bank Governor, effective immediately.
“The suspension is a result of an ongoing investigation into the activities of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”
As a result, Mr. Emefiele has been instructed to promptly hand over his responsibilities to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will assume the role of Acting Central Bank Governor until the investigation and reforms are concluded.
The statement reads;
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect.
“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.”
