The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), have made the decision to participate in a protest strike alongside the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The strike is a response to President Bola Tinubu’s government’s removal of fuel subsidy.
Scheduled to commence on June 7, 2023, the strike action will disrupt the generation and distribution of electricity throughout the entire country.
This development was conveyed in a memorandum issued by Dominic Igwebike, the general secretary of NUEE, on June 2.
The memorandum expressed the union’s solidarity with the NLC, which strongly criticized the sudden elimination of fuel subsidy as a policy that would intensify the suffering of Nigerians and exacerbate economic inflation.
According to the memo, “Following the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on June 2, 2023, at the Labour house in Abuja, in response to the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy, which has inflicted immense hardship on Nigerians and contributed to increased inflation in the economy, the NLC has instructed that the nationwide withdrawal of services will commence on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.”
The memo specifically directed electricity workers across the country to cease their services starting from midnight on Wednesday.
It stated, “Please take note that the nationwide withdrawal of services will commence from 0.00 hours of Wednesday, June 7, 2023.”
