Landmark College, Ikorodu has celebrated this year’s World Safety Day. The celebration was held on Friday April 28, 2023, in the school hall.
The 2023 World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual event that promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases locally and globally.
This year’s theme focuses on a “Safe and Healthy Working Environment: A Fundamental Right.
Speaking at the programme, the Principal Inspector of Factories, Occupational Safety and Health department at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mrs Ibukunoluwa Thomas, sensitised the students and staff to environmental hazards and prevention.
According to Mrs Thomas, the safety of students, teachers, and other staff is a nonnegotiable fundamental right.
She maintained that a learning environment must be conducive and hazard-free to promote the safety of the students and staff.
“The school management has a responsibility to provide a safe learning environment,” she said, adding that “any environment that is injurious to the students or threatens their safety is unfit and must be avoided.”
Advising the students on how to prevent accidents, Thomas listed things they must not do.
“You must first understand that accidents are harmful to the body. They threaten a person’s life. Then, you have to prevent whatever that can affect any parts of your body,” she said.
She continued, “There are some preventive measures you have to put in place. Avoid rough play. While walking in the corridor, you have to keep to the right-hand side to avoid a collision. Also, you must always ensure you hold the rails while ascending or descending the stairs.”
Thomas also cautioned the students against running and other dangerous play that could cause them severe injuries.
The seasoned safety expert did not fail to educate the staff on the best way to protect the students and promote a safe learning environment.
Addressing the staff, Thomas maintained that every staff member has a significant role to play. According to her, whatever poses a danger to the students must be removed or attended to.
“Teaching and nonteaching staff too have an important role to play in promoting safety. Staff need to be vigilant and observant. Dangerous objects must be removed. Things that need urgent repair must be reported to the management. And the students must be sensitised regularly to hazards in their environment,” she charged.
The school Principal, Mr Sanni Adebayo, appreciated the speaker. He enjoined the students and staff to promote their safety at all times.
He stated that “the school management will continue to prioritise all the preventive measures highlighted.”
Also present at the programme was the Senior Inspector of Factories, Occupational Safety and Health Department at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ikoyi, Lagos, Mr Izuchukwu Mgbemena.
Giving the vote of thanks, the programme coordinator, Ms Omodan Isibor, appreciated the speaker and her colleague for taking time out of their tight schedule to honour the invitation. She also commended the students and the staff for their time and rapt attention.
Omodan maintained that “this kind of event is a unique opportunity to learn, unlearn, and relearn safety measures, stressing that safety is everyone’s responsibility.
