A human rights activist, Festus Ogun, has condemned the killing of a lawyer, Omobolanle Raheem, by a police officer in the Ajah area of Lagos State.
According to a report, there was pandemonium in the Ajah area on Sunday when a police officer attached to the Ajah Police Station shot dead Omobolanle.
It was gathered that the incident threw the community into confusion as the cop, who was with a team of police, fled the scene.
He was, however, caught and detained by the police.
The report unveiled that Omobolanle, her sister, and four children were coming from an eatery in their car around 11am when the officer tried to stop them.
The report added that the woman was trying to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when the officer shot at her vehicle.
The bullet hit the victim; she was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead, according to the report.
Reacting to the ugly incident, Barrister Ogun lamented the consistent hatred for lawyers by the police.
“Lawyer Omobolanle Raheem was fatally shot dead yesterday by men of the Nigerian Police attached to Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos,” the rights activist said via his Facebook page aww
He added, “One death, too many. These evil and despicable men in uniform are getting emboldened with their reckless lawlessness. And lawyers are always targeted.
“This unfortunate incident is not unprecedented. The police have shown consistent contempt and hatred for lawyers, over the years.
“The legal profession must rise in unison to avert this perilous precedent. There must be consequences for impunity and justice must be served.”
Also reacting, Inibehe Effiong , condemned the gruesome killing of the lawyer.
“A lawyer, Bolanle Raheem, is reported to have been shot and murdered at close range on Christmas Day by a rogue policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Division, Ajah. This is barbaric,” he said.
He added, “It is a sad commentary that despite EndSARS, Nigerians are still being slaughtered by the police.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, also confirmed the incident, adding that the officer was in custody.
He said, “The officer involved in the shooting is an ASP; he has been arrested, detained, and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigations.”
