Ministers unite for efficient trade with advanced scanning technologies

In a groundbreaking meeting held on Monday, January 15, 2024, the Ministers of Marine and Blue Economy, Transportation, and the Customs Comptroller General join forces to reshape the nation’s ports and boost competitiveness.

The landmark strategic meeting at the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy which triggered the collaboration of Adegboyega Oyetola, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, and CG Customs Bashir Adeniyi, with virtual participation from NRC Managing Director Fidet Okhiria focused on enhancing port efficiency and trade facilitation through the integration of Non-Intrusive Inspection Technology (NIIT).

Key Resolutions

Prioritizing Scanning over Physical Examination

Acknowledging the pivotal role of NIIT, the Comptroller General of Customs is entrusted with prioritizing cargo scanning over traditional physical examination methods, aiming to actively decongest ports.

Repair and Utilization of Scanners

Immediate action endorsed to rectify and optimize existing scanners at prominent ports like Apapa, Tincan Island, Onne, and PTML. Mobile scanners will be strategically deployed to facilitate expeditious cargo inspections.

Rail Freight to Inland Containers Depot/Dry Ports

The NRC commits to freight cargoes to Inland container depots/dry ports, strategically alleviating congestion at major ports. Plans unveiled for efficient evacuation from Port Harcourt to Aba, with future extensions for Onne Port.

Bypassing Fixed Scanner during Rail Track Construction

In light of rail track construction, a pragmatic approach is agreed upon to bypass the fixed scanner at Apapa, ensuring the unhindered progression of the scanning process during crucial infrastructure development.

Public-Private Partnerships for Scanning Installation and Maintenance

Advocacy for exploring Public-Private Partnerships to oversee the installation and maintenance of scanning technology. This collaborative model aims to sustain efficiency and foster innovation in cargo inspection processes.
