Banditry: Zamfara gov bans traditional rulers from issuing mining consent letters

In a decisive move to combat the escalating challenge of banditry, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has signed an Executive Order forbidding traditional rulers from issuing consent letters for mining activities across the state.

The landmark decision, made official on Thursday at the Council Chambers, Government House, Gusau, aims to address one of the root causes of insecurity in the region.

Governor Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed in a statement that the executive order targets the prevalent trend of traditional rulers issuing consent letters, which has been identified as a major contributor to the worsening security situation in the state.

The order explicitly prohibits the issuance of consent letters for mining to individuals, companies, or organizations, across all 14 local government areas of Zamfara.

During the signing ceremony, Governor Lawal emphasized the severity of the dangers posed by the unrestrained issuance of consent letters, citing it as a significant factor fueling banditry.

He remarked, “Today, in my administration’s resolve to tackle insecurity, I signed an executive order prohibiting traditional rulers from issuing consent letters for mining across the 14 local government areas of Zamfara.”

The governor acknowledged the role of mining activities in exacerbating the security crisis, stating, “As a responsible government, it is crucial that we take decisive action to resolve the issue of illegal mining operations that have been contributing to the crisis.”

He emphasized the necessity of rectifying the problems associated with the reckless abuse of consent letters and assured the public that the government is taking all necessary steps to address the underlying issues.

Governor Lawal invoked divine guidance, stating, “We beseech Almighty Allah to guide us as we serve and safeguard the lives and properties of the people.”

The executive order signifies a bold step towards restoring peace and stability in Zamfara, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by illegal mining and its impact on the security landscape.
